All-Season vs. All-Weather Tires

Tucker Tire Covina, CA - Everything You Need to Know About Buying New Tires

So what’s the difference between all-season and all-weather tires? Let the experts at Tucker Tire Co. break it down for you.

All-Season Tires are just that – all seasons. The tires are designed to get your car through the mildest conditions that you might face in any season from wet springs, to hot asphalt summers, to light snow in winter. Light snow in California? Yes, even in California, we had to worry about light snow this year!

Keep in mind that all season tires are not dedicated snow tires. They are not ideal for regions that get a lot of snow, especially all at once. If road trips to snowy mountain areas are in your plans, we don’t suggest all season tires. With all season tires, you would still need to abide by chain laws, including wearing chains or avoiding travel when it is unsafe.

Now it’s time to talk all-weather tires.

All-weather tires are engineered to provide strong performance year-round regardless of weather conditions, assuming snowfall is on the lighter side. The tread used in all-weather tires can cope with snow, lessening the need for snow chains. The tread patterns are very different and include criss cross and zig zag patterns for catching the grip on snow and ice. The tires also use deep middle tread channels to expel water and slush, preventing hydroplaning.

Let’s Break it Down!

All-Season vs. All-Weather

Here are the major differences between all-season and all-weather tires:

When it comes to performance:

  • All-season tires may rid or handle better and typically have shorter stopping distances in dry weather.
  • All-weather tires are usually superior on wet roads and in ice, slush and snow, but may not be as comfortable.

When it comes to convenience:

  • All-weather tires are just that, all weather, and don’t need to be switched out between seasons.
  • All-season tires should be switched out if you plan to drive your vehicle in winter weather during colder months.
